2025 Newsletter
This, our second newsletter, celebrates 100 years since gold was discovered and the Red Lake Gold Rush began. At the west end of the lake, 8 mines were started. Most never produced, but exploration continues and one day soon, there will be a mine developed here. From 1926 through the 1930's, there was a vibrant community at the west end. People came hoping to discover gold, escape their past, find work, or just survive. Many people in Red Lake can trace their past back to one of these adventurists.
Indigenous people, the Paishk and Keesick families, lived here before the gold rush for an untold period of time. John Paishk, built and played his drum at West Narrows where people gathered for feasts, for fishing, and trapping. Many of them worked for the mines and later the camps at the west end. Many more moved to the Keejick beach area of Red Lake where the Pow Wow is held each year.
